Liebster Blog Award

Hi all!

I've recently received two nominations for the Liebster Blog Award! Thanks to Annie at the Nail Snail and Chanfie at Indian Ocean Polish  for the nominations. From what I can tell, this is more of a Chain Letter than an award, but I'm still going to play. I have to answer 11 questions from my nominees, and then nominate 11 bloggers with under 200 followers to answer my 11 questions.  LETS DO THIS!!

So up first here are the 22 questions that were asked of me.

Liebster Award: Questions & Answers

IndianOcean Polish Questions
1.     Who/what inspired your blog?
I’ve been doing nail art off and on for the last several years. Around a year ago I started following some polish blogs and formed some fast friendships with other bloggers. So with the help of my good friend Valerie (she made my fabulous blog header) and Cynthia over at Of Life and Lacquer, the 2 of them got me into Nail Blogging.

2.     Keeping with the 11 theme of this award, what are your 11 favorite polishes?
How do you pick 11 polishes?! That’s ridiculous but I’ll give it a try.
1.     A England St. George
2.     Butter London Bit Faker
3.     China Glaze I’m Not Lion
4.     Essie Chinchilly
5.     Flossy Lacquers Bedtime Paradox
6.     Lush Lacquer Clowning Around
7.     Maybelline Color Show Sapphire Masquerade
8.     OPI Alcatraz…Rocks
9.     OPI Tiffany Case
10. Orly Sparkling Garbage
11. Zoya Carter
Can you tell I like sparkles, holos, and textured polishes?  Don’t let the list fool you. I love me a good straight up crème polish too.

3.     What is your favorite type of nail art and how long have you been doing it?
I’d have to say stamping. It gives amazing results and is super quick. Stamping was my gateway drug into nail art, so close to 3 years.

4.     Do you ever experiment with different nail shapes/lengths? Which is your favorite?
I don’t and I wish I did. I’m rough on my hands, so lots of length doesn’t happen. I stick with a shorter squoval shape. I dream about having longer almond shaped nails.

5.     Do you have other hobbies other than painting your nails?
I love to sew/craft although I don’t do it as often as I’d like. I also love to play tennis.

6.     What nail related beauty product could you not live without?
Neutrogena Hand Cream. I love this lotion and I have bottles in my purse and all over the apartment, so I’m never to far from it.

7.     How many photo’s on average do you take of each mani?
Around 10-15. Then I usually pick the best 3 and go from there.

8.     What  is the biggest challenges you’ve faced with your blog?
My photos. I’m constantly trying to improve them and I feel like it can be really hit or miss on them.

9.     What technique that you have not tried yet would you like to master?
I’d like to try the elmers glue under glitter polish, but I’ve heard it takes forever to dry so I’m scared to try it.

10. What’s your go-to mani when you’re pushed for time?
Texture polish all the way. You don’t need topcoat, if you smudge it a little it doesn’t really show, and it’s always pretty.

11.  What mani are you most proud of, and why?
If it was 1 post with 2 mani’s does that count. I’m going to say my moving to NYC Nails, so I had one KS hand and a NYC hand and everything was freehanded. It was the most detailed I’ve ever gotten and the best execution of an idea I’ve ever had. http://fancyside.blogspot.com/2013/07/ive-got-announcementand-its-big-one.html

The Nail Snail Questions
1.     What is your favorite nail polish?
Really, I just had to pick 11. I guess I’ll go with A England’s St. George. If you don’t have that one in your life, you are missing out.

2.     What other hobbies do you have, besides nail polish?
I love to sew/craft although I don’t do it as often as I’d like. I also love to play tennis.

3.     In your opinion, what is the best mani you’ve ever done?

4.     How did you come up with your blog name?
I was having a conversation with my friend Valerie (who I got into nail art) and I told her that I’d brought her to the Fancy Side. It’s like the Dark Side but with pretty polish and glitter.  It became a joke and then when I decided to start my blog, it only seemed natural to call it that.

5.     What is your favorite flower?
I love snap dragons. They are such an unusual shape and the colors are gorgeous.

6.     What is the accomplishment you’re most proud of?
What’s with the tough questions? I would have to say I’m really proud of making it to Nationals with my college Tennis Team. We worked our butts off for that.

7.     Who is your favorite composer?
Uhhhhh… Tchaikovsky? I love the Nutcracker Suite as done by the original Fantasia. The Waltz of the Flowers is to die for. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQTZLLU9fjk

8.     What’s your favorite board game?
Cards against humanity. It’s the dirty version of Apples to Apples and it is HYSTERICAL!

9.     What sports do you like to watch/what are your favorite teams?
I like to watch Pro Football and College Basketball. You’d think as a tennis player/coach I’d like to watch tennis, but it drives me nuts to watch and not be playing.
Favorite teams are KC Chiefs, KC Royals, KU Jayhawks, NY Knicks.

10. What would be your dream vacation?
Safari in Africa!

11. Do you like country music? And if you do, do you agree that Blake Shelton has a bit of a monopoly over the country radio stations?
I’m not going to lie, the second half of this question cracks me up. I do like Country Music, but I usually just listen to what I have in my itunes, so I don’t know about Blake monopolizing the airwaves.

Alright these are the questions that I'm asking!

1.     What book have you read more than once?
2.     Favorite polish color?
3.     What is your favorite animal?
4.     If you owned an Etsy shop, what would you sell?
5.     Favorite movie from your childhood?
6.     What is a current fashion trend that you absolutely hate?
7.     What is your go to outfit?
8.     What part of school did you hate the most?
9.     What favorite TV show currently?
10. Do you have a dream car?
11. Tell me a random fact about yourself!

Finally, I'm nominating the following bloggers!
  1. Valerie at One Sassy Housewife

  8. PsycoSexy
  9. Jossie at Pinkbeauty
  10. Heather at I Feel Polished!
  11. Madison at Fundamentaly Flawless
I don't know how many of you ladies will participate, but if you do. I hope you have fun!

OPI Liquid Sand in Alcatraz...Rocks

Do y'all remember when I used to be "ehh textured polish is weird, I don't know if I like it"? Well you can officially call me reformed. I LOVE textured polishes now. Like I luuuuurve them. Seriously. I think the last 10 polishes I bought have been textured.

Anyways, as soon as OPI started releasing pictures of the fall collection, I knew that Alcatraz..Rocks would be mine. I looked everywhere and everyone beat me to the punch, because it was sold out every place I looked. Well, I finally found it the other day, filled with glee I purchased it, ran home and put it on my fingers. And here it is.

Alcatraz...Rocks has a smoky deep purple base with amazing colorful flashes from the prettiest sparkles. Its incredibly difficult to capture on camera. I can see beautiful flashes of pink, gold, blues, and purples. This is by far my favorite textured polish that I own, and I have Zoya Carter (CARTER IS AMAZEBALLS PEOPLE).

Where are you at in the world of textured polishes? Love or hate? Which one is your favorite?

Enjoy & until next time, Amy Lee

White Gold Chevrons

Today I have a look for you with a new Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Polish. This is Coat of Arms, which is a Prabal Gurung for Sally Hansen. He collaborated with Sally Hansen for their 2013 collection. This was the only one that really spoke to me, so I picked it up.

This is a weird shade as it's not quite a true silver (even though my pictures look that way). I'm going to call it White Gold as thats what it looks like to me.

To spice it up, I've used my new Orly Instant Artist stripers in Crisp White, Jet Black, and True Blue to create some fun chevrons.

Finally, I topped it all off with a coat of Revlon Matte Topcoat. I really enjoyed the depth that the matte topcoat gave to this look.

What do you vote? Matte or Shiny?

Enjoy & until next time, Amy Lee

China Glaze On the Horizon Collection

So I know that for most people it's either a love or hate thing when it comes to bar glitter. My friend Valerie hates bar glitter (she calls them Hairy Glitter) but I'm firmly in the LOVE group. So today, I have for you a fun collection. This is China Glaze's On the Horizon Collection.

The formula was similar on all of these so let me get it out of the way. I applied one coat over a base color for all of these and loaded up my brush with glitter, put a big glob on my nail, then pushed it around to cover the nail. (I hope that makes sense) On to the pictures. There are alot of them so be prepared.

Flying South over LCN Hot Chili. Flying South is peach and yellow bar glitter in a clear base with peach microglitter.

Light as a Feather over LCN Blue Oasis. Light as a Feather is black, white, yellow, and peach bar glitter in a clear base.

All a Flutter over LCN Pink Pepper. All a Flutter is periwinkle, peach, and light pink bar glitter in a clear base.

Flock Together over LCN Fiery Cumin. Flock Together is light blue, black, and lime green bar glitter in a clear base.

You're a Hoot over Maybelline Color Show Plush Plum. You're a Hoot is peach, yellow, and black bar glitter in a clear base.

Party Fowl over OPI My Vampire is Buff. Party Fowl is periwinkle, peach, and black bar glitter in a clear base.

My favorites are All a Flutter, Party Fowl, and Flying South. Which ones are your favorites?

Enjoy & until next time, Amy Lee

LCN Shades of Desert

Do you ever see a picture of a polish (or polishes) and think, MY GAWD I NEED THAT? I would say that is why I purchase most polishes. I see them on someone else's blog or on Pinterest and then I can't get them out of my head. Anyways, I originally saw swatches of these over on Cynthia's blog, so I blame her.

These four shades are from LCN's Shades of Desert collection. Up first we have Hot Chili.

Hot Chili isn't the most original color, but it is a beautiful red. I'm a sucker for pretty reds so this is a great color. It's more of a crelly side, so I used 3 coats to avoid visible nail line (VNL).

Blue Oasis is a beautiful dusty bright blue. Its so gorgeous on, but unfortunately it does stain a bit. Nothing major, but enough to mention it.

Pink Pepper is a stunning hot pink creme. It's an easy 2 coat application and is so pretty. Hot Pink isn't the most original color again, but when paired with the other 3 colors in this collection it fits in perfectly.

Finally we have my favorite color in the collection, Fiery Cumin. This shade reminds me of a sumptuous leather jacket. It's a beautiful sienna type color that flatters every skin tone. Can't go wrong with this one.

Overall this is a great collection. All the colors have an easy self leveling formula an dry super shiny.

Which color is your favorite?

Enjoy & until next time, Amy Lee

My Nails during China

OMG You Guys!!!

I'm back on the blog. Did you miss me? Probably not, but I missed y'all so that counts right? Also...HI to all the new readers. I'm so excited that you found my little corner of the internet!!

I wanted to write a quick post and let you all see the mani's that I wore in China.

Up first, the mani I wore for almost 2 weeks, this was done with Sally Hansen Insta Gel Strips in Back to the Fuschia (pink) and Hooray Ombre!

After this starting getting chipped all to hell, I took it off (polish remover pads and their packages make great removers that fit 3 fingers each and easily remove gel polish with patience) and replaced it with Sally Hansen Salon Effects Polish Strips in Tri-Bal It On and Violet Night. The strips lasted me through the rest of China, so it worked out perfectly.

Ready for the weirdest mani pose EVER?!

What do you think? These are Doctor Fish and they are part of a fish pedicure. Basically they eat all the dead skin off your feet. I know this isn't for everyone (I'm sorry to all those who I creep out) but really it just tickles more than anything. It was a fun experience and I'm so glad I took advantage of it.

I have so much to tell you all about China. I could show you thousands of pictures (literally) but I won't bore you that much. I do have a fun idea for a new series (at least for a while) I'm going to do some China inspired mani's and show you the picture that I took which inspired it. Does that sound cool? I hope so, cause I'm excited to show you some of the experiences I had.

Enjoy & until next time, Amy Lee

Guest Post: Cynthia from Of Life and Lacquer

Yes, you are on the correct blog. Today I am taking over Amy’s blog and making The Fancy Side a lot less fancy with my inappropriateness. Ok, I’m not really going to be inappropriate because contrary to popular belief, I can be a lady. Kind of. I didn't quite know what to do for this post so I decided to keep it simple because any time I try to do anything fancy, it blows up in my face. I’ve been playing with neons and glitters for the past few weeks so I felt that I needed a nail palette cleanser of sorts. I’ve always loved white nails so today I decided to show you one of my favorite off white polishes EVER: Sation Strumming My Nails. In fact, I think it is my favorite. Strumming My Nails was in a close battle to the death with OPI’s My Boyfriend Scales Walls and it has come out victorious. Let’s take a look at the vanquisher!

Whether you like white polishes or not, you have to admit that this is a beauty. While I love the color, I think that the formula is so rich and pigmented that you can’t help and swoon when realize that this is a two-coat white. Yes, TWO coats! That’s practically unheard of when it comes to this type of colors!
Now, to celebrate Amy’s move to New York, I finally had the chance to bust out my Statue Of Liberty stamping image. However, I didn’t stop just there…

I decided to use other international iconic monuments such as The Eiffel Tower, The Colosseum and The Leaning Tower Of Pisa. I have been fortunate enough to see all of these monuments in person so it made me happy to have an opportunity to use them.
So there you have it folks. If you like white/off white polishes, I hope that you can get your hands on a bottle of Strumming My Nails because you will love it. Thanks so much for humoring me today, and I hope you're having a great day!

Cynthia is simply fabulous! Her stamping is always so crisp and original, it makes me green with envy!! Before I even started my blog I was emailing back and forth with her, and she's been really encouraging every step of the way! Love this chica and her beautiful fingers!! Be sure to stop by Of Life and Lacquer and say HI!

Guest Post: MisfitLesley of Twitter and Instagram

Whoa, look at me, I’m on The Fancy Side! That’s just fine because I think I’ll fit into this glittery corner of the Internet quite well. ;)

My name is Lesley and I met Amy through mutual inappropriateness on Twitter. She invited me, along with some other special, crazy, gals, to guest post during her trip to China. I am happy, and slightly intimidated, as this is actually my first blog post! I’ll try to do right by her. ;)

So the theme for the guest posts was “travel.” I immediately had the idea to use this blue (Illamasqua Noble) with clouds and an airplane. My idea stalled at the airplane because I didn’t want to freehand one and didn’t have any decals, etc. Well, I happened to go on an insane polish shopping spree in Southern California for my birthday with Cynthia from Of Life and Lacquer (who I’m assuming has already guest posted or will be guest posting shortly), and realized that I had found my solution while buying out a store of all of their Hello Kitty decals (yes, I am one of those girls…no shame in my Hello Kitty-loving game).

First, let me just tell you about Illamasqua Noble. I sat down to do this thing and did not want to cover it up. It’s a vibrant, robin’s egg/sky blue, and it applies in two perfect coats. It was also probably the shiniest polish I’ve ever seen without topcoat.

After convincing myself to go through with this theme, I also scrapped trying to do clouds because it was really late (as in early in the morning late) and I didn’t want to risk a disasticure, so I reverted to tried and true dots in China Glaze White Out. They sort of represent clouds, right? Right.

Nonetheless, I am still pretty happy with how this turned out, even if it’s a deviation from my original idea. I think it came out cute. I’ve also got a little coordinating Hello Kitty bow on my thumb.
Of course, I only realized after-the-fact that Hello Kitty is upside-down in a photo and it’s hard to get the bow to show with the rest of it. I also generally have a tough time getting colors to look quite like they do in real life. Rookie mistakes, here, but, I tried. ;)

If anyone’s interested in seeing more of my non-professional nail photos, you can check out misfitlesley on Twitter and Instagram.

I’d like to extend a huge thanks to Amy for having me here on her blog! I’m excited and happy for her new adventures in life to begin and can’t wait to see all of the things that are coming up for her.

Lesley is to cute! Go follow her on Twitter now!! She always makes me laugh and I love our inappropriate convos!! I kinda hate her and Cynthia a smidge for their polish spree though. These decals are the cutest ever and I'm super jealous of that Illamasqua polish!  Also, please join me and all the others in trying to convince her to start a blog! It would be filled with fun manis and gorgeous bracelets. Thanks again Les!

Guest Post: Amanda from Mae's Beauty

Hey guys, Amanda here while Amy is traveling all over the US moving and then on her big two-week trip away from us! I am so happy to be here with you guys and honored to be on this amazeballs blog of hers :)

The theme she asked me to do was travel nails. I have some unique well hopefully you think they are too.. nails for you today.

I went for a Pirate theme, hey thats travel too right, I got this new amazing Hello Kitty stamping plate that has over about 20 different Hello Kitty's and one of them she is a pirate! That's right! So these are my Hello Kitty traveling via Pirate ship nails

For this look I used two coats of 'Ulta-Snow White' on my pinky and my stamping plate 'Cheeky CH49' to stamp the wheels using 'Nubar - Lustful red'. My Hello Kitty pirate was plate 'MJ - Hello Kitty' and I stamped her using 'Zoya -Suri' overtop two coats of 'Zoya Barbie'. My pirate ship nail, I started with two coats of 'Contrary polish - Aruba' and topped it with my pirate ship stamp 'Cheeky CH49' and 'Essie - No place like chrome'. Lastly my skull and crossbones nail I used 'China Glaze - Liquid leather for the stamp using same Cheeky stamp 'CH49' overtop two coats of 'China Glaze - Sea Spray'

Alright guys, well that is all I have for you today, I hope that you enjoyed this mani. I hope I did Amy proud and she has me back again some time! :)

I love these nautical themed nails! Amanda doesn't even know this, but they fit me perfectly! I grew up traveling the USA with my Dad while he competed in Sailing Regattas. He was even the alternate for the '92 Olympics, not bad for being from KS huh? A good portion of my childhood was pretending to be pirates on the boats! This stamping job is super adorable and I love the different color schemes. Be sure to pop by Mae's Beauty and say Hi!

Guest Post: Voni from For the Love of Nail Art

So hello all there, it is me, V aka @vonimoller, all the way from sunny South Africa.

Amy asked me to do a guest post for her and I wanted to do an SA mani because this is my home and I've never been to any of my favourite places (India or Egypt).

South Africa is such a sunny, warm place so that's why on my index and pinky you see lil suns.
On my ring and middle finger, I freehanded the South African flag and I'm including a small tutorial collage.
1. Start by drawing a triangle in black, then filling the area.
2. Outline your triangle with yellow.
3. Make a thickish, green Y shape and then fill that in.
4. Outline each side with white.
5. Fill the top with red and the bottom with blue
6. Top coat that baby!

So welcome to South Africa, even if it's only a virtual visit to my blog :D

Thanx Amy for letting your readers travel to me and letting me spam your blog a bit :D

V is my furthest away polish friend and you'd better believe that I want to adventure my way to SA and see her. We'll go on Safari together with perfectly manicured nails. :-) I love that she taught us all how to create her countries flag via nails! They are so beautiful! Be sure to visit SA through her blog!
