Day 9 people! Can you believe I made it 9 days with this challenge so far? I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty damn proud of myself. Today's theme for the Untried Polish Challenge is Cheapest. Today I have for you, coming in at $2.99, Color Club's Sky High.
Sky High is actually a glass fleck polish with a blue and purple duo-chrome finish. I have no idea how people photograph duo-chromes. I took around 100 pictures (that may be an exaggeration but I for the life of me, couldn't get the purple to show in a single picture.
I love the way this polish looks. The only bad news, is this is a stainer. Big time. Not only do you get the little glass flecks all over your skin, it turns you blue like Violet Beauregarde from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. It's a total bummer when polishes do that.
If you have tips on photographing duo-chromes, let me know? Please and Thank You!

This is a lovely shade of blue. Too bad all the pretty polishes stain so badly!
ReplyDeleteI know its, the pits. Doesn't mean I'll stop using them. ;-)
DeleteThat polish is insane pretty! I can't stop looking at the pictures, your nails look so good!
ReplyDeleteI normally just use really really bright fluorescent light for duo-chrome, but I still find it annoying to photograph.
Aww Thanks!!! That's so sweet of you to say.
DeleteI'll totally have to try your method out next time I'm taking pictures of a duochrome.
yeah I was gonna say that: often duos come out better in florescent or sometimes if you can get "diffuse" light, like filter sunlight through a window shade or something, that will often allow both colors to show by getting rid of that stripe of shine. I take mine under a not-so-dark window shade, so I dunno what else might work, maybe a thick piece of paper over a window or lamp?
ReplyDeleteGreat tips!! I don't usually go for duochromes so this one was so hard for me to photograph. I'll try your tips next time I'm trying to capture the color shift.
DeleteTaking pictures of your nails underwater is super good for showing off duochromes! It just always scares me to have my camera that close to water...
ReplyDeleteThis underwater thing sounds crazy. I'll have to try it next time I wear a duochrome.
DeleteI love your comparison to Violet Beauregarde! I need to watch me some chocolate, now. =)
ReplyDeleteI love those movies, both of them. So it makes sense that I would go there.
DeleteThat's such a pretty blue, it doesn't look *cheap* at all!
ReplyDeleteI try turning my nails at different angles to pick up the colours for duochrome swatches; I usually just take my pictures near the window in sunlight and they come out OK. Some of my best duochrome pics (Enchanted Octopus's Garden) were taken on a walk on the beach on a sunny day! And always, the underwater trick works like magic - just be careful not to dip your lens in the water!
I've never heard of this underwater trick, I'll definetly have to give it a go. Thank you so much for stopping by. It means alot.
DeleteThat is a fantastic blue <3
ReplyDeleteThanks! I just wish I could have gotten the flash of the purple duochrome to show you all. It makes it even better.
Delete1. LOVE the blue
ReplyDelete2. The only way I can figure out to photograph duochromes is outside. It's the best I can usually do. Otherwise I can photograph inside until I'm blue and nothing happens
I wish I had tried outdoors, but I'm pretty sure that I took these photos at night so I couldn't. Next time I'm going to plan ahead for these stinking polishes.
